Child Bride
Eleven-year-old Ying, growing up in China in the late 1940s, was introduced to readers in the author's previous novels. In this latest episode of Ying's colorful life, she is sent to visit an elderly grandmother who is supposed to be very ill. But after a day-long trip, Ying arrives to discover that her grandmother is in perfectly good health. A set of seemingly mysterious events begins to fall into place, and at the last moment Ying discovers that a marriage has been arranged for her. True to character, she rebels against a fate she has not chosen. Once again, Ching Yeung Russell brings the reader entirely inside a child's mind as Ying is confronted with the confusing machinations of the adult world.
